How Our Self-Sabotage Influences Our Kids

"Give me a child until the age of 7 and I will show you the man"- Aristotle

Aristotle said this because he knew that the first 7 years of a child’s life form the framework for who they will be as adults. There is a part of their mind that is constantly scanning the environment around them trying to learn what is acceptable behavior. When this part of the mind, the subconscious, scans the environment it is also noticing repeated behavior or actions.

Every time an action is repeated, the belief that this action is acceptable behavior is reinforced. So, for instance, if your kid sees you binge-watching tv, drinking alcohol, and eating junk food they will learn that this is acceptable behavior. More than this, they will be attracted to these things, or something equally destructive, in their lives.

Monkey see… monkey do.

This is how children, adopt the problems of their parents. They see the actions repeated over and over again until it is ingrained into them that this is the right way to act in our society. The good news is this also works for positive actions. If your kid witnesses you working out every day, eating healthy, and working on your dreams/goals then they will be drawn to these things as well. This is why the most important thing you can do for your kids is to choose to live the healthiest life possible. Make the changes now, so they don’t have to.

When we are adults making positive changes can become much harder as the subconscious mind, doesn’t want to let go of these old habits we learned from our parents and society. I know I struggled for a long time, trying to make positive changes in my life. I didn’t understand why I kept sabotaging my progress. I felt like a failure… as if there was something wrong with me. I would tell myself I wanted to stop drinking, just to find myself drinking the next day. This just didn’t happen with alcohol, it happened in all parts of my life.

So what changed you may be wondering?

Well, I found someone who could teach me why I was sabotaging my progress. Understanding this information, allowed me to look at my problems from a new point of view. I realized I was going through life without critical knowledge that we should all know. Knowing how the most powerful part of our mind, the subconscious, works is essential if you want to make quick progress toward your best life. Once I learned this information, I quit drinking alcohol and have been sober for almost 4 years now. I started eating healthy, and I really do enjoy it. I started to practice self-love and self-care, and now it is my new normal.

Learning about self-sabotage and the subconscious mind has molded me into the man I am today. I can truthfully say, that this information has made my life better in every way and it continues to do so every day.

I want you, to become the best person you can be and your kids to mimic that. You both deserve it...
